I know you’ve heard the observation that life happens while we are making other plans.
Yep, it is a very wise and true statement that we seem to keep forgetting until another mini-crisis hits us and all our plans are automatically put aside. And somehow, in the process of taking care of the new distracting trauma, we lose sight of our daily purpose.
We tend to get all bent out of shape with all this breaking news surrounding us. Some of us turn into drama queens. Some live their lives through the drama happening to others and get involved by spreading the word about the situation.
Now, in no way do I mean to minimize traumatic surprises that can cause real hurt. It is always important to respond with compassion and clear thinking to such situations. But how can we keep from being distracted by all the meaningless an unimportant information that does nothing more than complicate and overwhelm our lives?
Maybe the best way (that spiritual, scientific, and psychological experts have found) is to simply step back, on a daily basis, and put things into perspective. Giving ourselves time alone in quiet is vital to the important part of life. With meditation, such as time spent simply listening to and being in God’s loving presence, we can reduce stress, increase peace, and become more aware of now. Meditation and quiet prayer can keep us focused on the essentials in life…and with a peaceful, nonreactive lifestyle.
